At approximately 5:13 p.m., a woman driving a Volkswagen Touareg eastbound on St. George Boulevard rear-ended a white Toyota Corolla which was stopped at a red light at the intersection of 1000 East, St. George Police Sgt. Spencer Holmes said. Following the initial impact, the Corolla then rear-ended a gray Hyundai Accent that was also stopped at the light.

The St. George Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the scene along with the St. George Police Department, who helped assess the medical needs of those involved before allowing the wrecked cars to clear the intersection, Holmes said. The man driving the Corolla was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center, but was the only reported injury.

All three vehicles were driven from the roadway, Holmes said. Traffic was slowed for approximately 15 minutes before it was allowed to continue as usual.

Mary Jo Paay, of St. George, said her husband was the man transported to the hospital, and that he was complaining of back pain after the accident.

“She (the Touareg driver) just crunched us in the middle,” Paay said. “I think she just didn’t stop.”

While she did remain on scene to exchange information with police, Paay said she would be heading to the hospital as soon as she could to check on her husband’s condition.

The woman driving the Touareg was given a citation for following too close, Holmes said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by the authorities and may not contain the full scope of findings.
