St. George – A man was injured Monday afternoon in a head-on collision, just blocks away from and less than an hour after a similar collision that also happened on Red Cliffs Drive. Both accidents involved drivers turning left across traffic.
At approximately 3:56 p.m. Monday, a man driving with his wife was trying to turn onto Mall Drive from Red Cliffs Drive, and turned left in front of an oncoming Toyota 4Runner.
“A red Honda passenger car, driven by an elderly man, was westbound on Red Cliffs Drive attempting to turn left to go south on Mall Drive. As it turned, it turned in front of the 4Runner and hit it head on,” St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain said.
The collision sent the Honda careening off of the road and onto the sidewalk. The 4Runner was able to pull onto Mall Drive and out of the way of traffic.
This was the second accident on Red Cliffs Drive within an hour. Traffic was disrupted on Red Cliffs Drive as well as Mall Drive as emergency crews assisted the driver of the Honda, loaded him into a waiting ambulance and cleaned up wreckage and debris from the scene of the accident.
“The driver of the Honda was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries, more of a precaution,” Despain said. “Fortunately the passenger of the Honda and the driver of the 4Runner were uninjured. It is my understanding that they will issue a citation to the driver of the Honda.”
St. George Police Department, St. George Fire Department, and Gold Cross Ambulance all responded to the scene.
