ST. GEORGE — With the help of witnesses, St. George Police officers were able to locate and cite a man for improper lane travel and leaving the scene of an accident after his involvement in a hit-and-run on North Bluff Street in St. George Friday afternoon.
At approximately 3:02 p.m., a man driving a silver passenger car was traveling southbound in the right-hand lane near 1250 N. Bluff St. when the lane abruptly ended due to the placement of road construction barrels directing traffic to merge into the left lane, St. George Police Sgt. Rich Triplett said.
The driver of the silver car attempted to make a U-turn and crossed in front of a white Ford Explorer, driven by a woman, that was also traveling southbound. Both vehicles resultantly collided, and the Explorer sustained extensive damage to its front grill. The driver of the silver car fled the scene, Triplett said.
When officers responded, witnesses were able to provide them with the suspect’s license plate number, and officers were able to locate the man at his home.
“He said he didn’t know he had been hit, but you could see he had been with the damage present to the back of his car,” Triplett said.
No injuries were reported by either driver as a result of the collision. The owner of silver passenger car driver was cited for leaving the scene of an accident and for improper lane travel.
The St. George Police Department, St. George Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance attended to the accident scene.
Triplett said hit-and-run accidents are quite common, but most happen in a parking lots where unattended parked cars are hit. He said having witnesses at the scene is a big help in hit-and-run cases.
“Witnesses get us a lot of the information, and that is paramount to those cases,” he said.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
